ACHIEVEMENT

Young people want to shape the world around them.
Through Public Achievement, they have that opportunity.

Through Public Achievement, people of all ages work with others to meet challenges and solve problems. They learn from each other the meaning of citizenship and democracy. Ordinary people do extraordinary things.

what is

PUBLIC ACHIEVEMENT?

Let me show you.

Volunteer

Between 2018-2019, I served as a volunteer for Public Achievement facilitating dialogue about social issues with high school students, guiding research about topics voted by the class, and mentoring community-based projects.

With my support, my students built a social media platform for awareness about racism, showcased thought-provoking art in the school, hosted a school-wide clothing drive for a homelessness center, and partnered with another school to equip a compost system in the lunch areas.

I felt like there could be improvement in collaboration with local schools, structure for program development, and plan for reaching more students with better leadership. Their vision of PA didn’t encompass its potential, let alone youth’s potential.

I knew I wanted to be a bigger part of this program.

Coordinator

My passion lays in PA because of its mission to give students the space to explore their connection to social issues like racism, the climate crisis, homelessness, etc. To me, it’s all about empowering youth to take charge.

  • Redesigned materials for summer training to give the volunteers transferable and scaffolded skills about facilitating and social justice

  • Set achievable goals about improving the civic engagement process

  • Recruited more qualified volunteers to increase students’ exposure to civic discourse

  • Communicated with PA personnel across Colorado in order to make programs better statewide

  • Plan and lead applicable trainings

  • Created new resources for mentors—like a Coach Development Rubric that outlines explicit expectations

  • Observed their time in the classroom and give productive feedback

  • Collaborated with corresponding teachers and administrators about school-wide changes in order to make more room for PA

  • Generated a teacher handbook that structures classes to implement civic engagement without needing PA volunteers because of the high demand for our program in schools
